In 2016, a horror film known of as Hush was released to the general public by Mike Flanagan. The film is based off of young woman (named Maddie) that is deaf and lives alone in the small city of Fairhope, Alabama. As the film progresses, we are shown more aspects of her everyday life such as the people she surrounds herself with and her constant habits from day to day. In addition to all of the conflicts she already has, her situation is worsened by the psychotic stalker that is persistent in killing and mentally abusing her in more ways than you can think. Flanagan used fear of the unknown in Hush to create a fear / anxiety for the viewers while watching. The fear of unknown is basically self explanatory, it is the fear of not knowing the truth behind a certain topic which leads to anxiety. In the film they incorporate various concepts of fear to portray the film to be fearful. In the beginning of the movie, Maddie is oblivious to what’s occurring at first, she is shown feeding her cat while her stalker is standing outside her porch door knocking on the glass. This scene was very significant to the message the writers were trying to portray because Maddie, of course, isn’t able to hear which isn’t necessarily the scariest part, the scary part is that the viewers know that she can’t hear the man. For my adaptation, I decided the best way to execute the concepts of fear would be to photograph the components of fear that are in the movie Hush and illustrate that through my pictures.I chose to study Hush because of the overwhelming amount of interesting concepts used throughout the movie. I liked the overall plot of the story, I definitely have never come across a movie that has incorporated a disabled person being tortured. Another thing that lead me towards picking this choice for my film is the anticipation. There wasn’t very many things I disliked about the film. However, if I really had to pick small, details it would be the pace of the plot. I just felt like when the man and Maddie were in the altercation the pace was extremely quick. If the setting for Hush were to ever be modified, I believe, the entire film would be extremely different. The movie if filmed in a reserved, private community in the woods which creates a mysterious and scarier vibe for the viewers. For example, if it were to be filmed in a busy city this scenario were be so much more different. If Maddie were to be running around an area with more houses and people around her she probably wouldn’t have been tortured for as long as she was. The film is focused on intersectionality (race, gender, class). I will be going into further detail and research of these concepts and how they are expressed in the piece. In the movie all of these are involved however I felt although it would. After I’m done expressing my study I hope that my audience will come to a realization. Would this situation be different if it was a man? Would it be different if it was a woman or man of color? What about if it was someone of high stature? These are the questions I hope to pose towards my peers.
